Take Action for Clean Water

Clean water connects us all—it sustains our families, wildlife, and communities. The Environmental Protection Agency has just released a proposal that would effectively gut America’s primary law protecting us against dirty, polluted water and aquatic habitat destruction. This is just one part of a decades-long effort to weaken important aspects of the Clean Water Act, by revoking protections for most streams and nearly all freshwater wetlands.

This will particularly benefit polluting industries such as the data centers—which will now be able to quickly build massive structures on top of streams and wetlands, without even pulling a permit. Tell the EPA to protect our streams and wetlands in order to protect water quality, wildlife, and our way of life.

This supplemental proposal to dramatically narrow the scope of streams and wetlands protected by the Clean Water Act will harm drinking water quality, destroy wildlife habitat, and put communities across the country at greater risk. I oppose efforts to reduce the number and extent of streams, wetlands, and other waters subject to the pollution prevention, control, and cleanup requirements of the Clean Water Act.

Streams are essential to our drinking water. Water from healthy streams is cleaner and costs less to treat; these streams are also critical for wildlife and for outdoor recreation in our larger lakes and rivers.

Wetlands naturally filter pollutants out of the water that flows from our taps and help mitigate the damage from increasingly severe storms and floods.

This supplemental proposal will effectively gut America’s primary law that ensures we have access to clean water and healthy aquatic habitat for fishing and swimming. The loss of basic protections for the majority of the nation’s wetlands and streams will mean there will be fewer places to safely swim, fish, and drink.

The EPA and the Corps must take seriously their obligation under the law to protect waters, communities, and public health and maintain basic Clean Water Act protections for as many waters as the law allows. I urge the agencies to keep the current regulations in place while protecting as many waters as possible.
