The devastation from extreme winter storms that swept our nation did not have to happen. As the climate crisis causes more extreme weather, I am calling on our leaders to ensure proper investment in resilient infrastructure and weatherized equipment to ride out future events, and to protect lives and livelihoods.
Further, the restoration of natural systems that help combat climate change and its impacts must be prioritized and funded. I am counting on elected and appointed officials across all levels of government to restore crucial natural systems—including natural shorelines that can protect coastal communities from storm surges, forests and woodlands that will sequester climate—disrupting carbon, and tallgrass prairies to help absorb flood waters that threaten neighborhoods.
This is important to me. People and communities will be better safeguarded for it. And wildlife and the habitats they depend on will be restored.
