Help Both Game and Nongame Species by Telling Congress to Support Recovering America’s Wildlife Act.

Wildlife across the country, like the brook trout, are in decline. For more than a century, wildlife conservation efforts in America have been predominantly funded with user licenses and fees, putting hunters and anglers on the hook for supporting the majority of wildlife conservation programs in most states. With over 12,000 species of wildlife falling under “species of greatest conservation need”, hunters and anglers alone can't fund recovery efforts for the full range of at-risk wildlife. The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act would provide more than $1.3 billion annually to state-led wildlife conservation efforts, relieving some of the burden on the sporting community.

Hunters and anglers will benefit in myriad ways from the restoration and recovery efforts that would result from passage of the bipartisan Recovering America’s Wildlife Act. This legislation will restore outdoor habitat, leading to more fish and wildlife, more access for outdoor recreation, and a broader base of support for conservation that benefits both big game species and fish such as the brook trout.

For more than a century, wildlife conservation efforts in America have been predominantly funded with user licenses and fees, putting hunters and anglers on the hook for providing a vast majority of most state’s wildlife conservation programs. Currently, 80% of funding for state fish and wildlife agencies comes from hunting and angling license fees. While the sporting community is proud to pay, we also think the burden of managing America’s wildlife should be spread to others who also enjoy wildlife.

Right now, more than one-third of our fish and wildlife species are at-risk of becoming extinct. We have already lost more than 150 U.S. species to extinction and another 500 species are "missing in action". It’s clear that hunting and angling fees do not provide enough funding to make sure states are able to make meaningful progress toward conserving increasingly at-risk species and their sensitive habitats. We need a solution that shares the responsibility of conserving our wildlands while protecting the species that drive hunting and angling license demand without straining one user group more than another.

America’s game and nongame wildlife are vital to our national heritage and our $887 billion outdoor economy. But state fish and wildlife agencies have identified more than 12,000 Species of Greatest Conservation Need. The bi-partisan Recovering America’s Wildlife Act will accelerate the recovery of these species, including the more than 1,600 U.S. species already listed under the Endangered Species Act.

The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act is built upon the premise that the best way to save America’s wildlife is through collaborative, proactive, voluntary work before species become endangered. When restoration efforts are completed in wetlands to aid songbirds, waterfowl, fish and other species important to the sporting community will also benefit. The result of this generational conservation effort will be better habitat, more fish and wildlife, more access for outdoor recreation and a broader base of support for conservation – essentially everybody wins.

The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act offers the best chance in a lifetime to fully fund state fish and wildlife agencies, prevent species from becoming endangered, and give our fish and wildlife the fighting chance they deserve to survive and thrive in our modern world.
