Protect our Great Lakes Economy, Tell Gov. Whitmer uphold Great Lakes protections against Enbridge

Clean and healthy Great Lakes are essential to the economy of the Great Lakes region. Businesses rely on pristine natural resources and the consumer demands of the thriving tourism economy to create jobs, support communities and provide services that sustain the Great Lakes way of life. The proposed Line 5 tunnel is a direct threat to businesses, wildlife, and communities.

Remind Michigan officials they must uphold Great Lakes laws and Treaties, and reject Enbridge’s Line 5 tunnel proposal, which jeopardizes our way-of-life, our freshwater, Indigenous treaty rights and our Great Lakes economy.

I am writing to expressly oppose the proposed NPDES permit by Enbridge for the proposed Line 5 oil tunnel in the Straits of Mackinac.

The permit would authorize withdrawals and discharges up to 6 million gallons per day of water from the Straits, along with numerous other waterwater discharges during construction and operation. This incredible discharge is not our only concern.

What endangers our communities and economies even more is Enbridge’s parallel effort to remove state oversight from its future operations. Enbridge’s efforts aim to strip Michigan of its ability to enforce core Great Lakes protection, monitor safety or respond to threats.

Granting any of Enbridge’s Line 5 tunnel permits is a violation of Great Lakes protections and creates a dangerous precedent that side-lines state authority and Treaty protections to corporate interests, putting our freshwater, tourism and habitats at catastrophic risk.

Building a tunnel to house part of the Line 5 pipeline - which is already 72 years old - would devastate wetlands and aquatic habitats, subjecting fisheries, charter boat captains, outfitters, retailers, and a robust network of hospitality businesses to the consequences.

As a business leader, the tunnel project is not a safer alternative to Enbridge's ongoing illegal operation of Line 5. The tunnel is a false solution that creates new risks for generations to come.

Michigan’s advancement of an orderly shutdown of Line 5 would have no noticeable impact on gas prices or fuel supplies, even by Enbridge’s own experts' admission. Studies have shown that decommissioning Line 5 would create more jobs, while upholding Great Lakes laws and Tribal Treaty rights.

In the face of the federal actions to fast-track reckless projects while diminishing regulatory oversight, I urge you to take a stand for the people of Michigan and for the Great Lakes by rejecting this NPDES permit and all Enbridge Line 5 tunnel permits.
