Tell Congress Not to Sell Off Millions of Acres of Public Lands

Our public lands are vital to maintaining our sporting traditions. Hunters and anglers from across the nation, and even the world, flock to our public lands to enjoy innumerable hunting and fishing opportunities.

I am writing to urge you to oppose attempts to sell off public lands in reconciliation.

Proposals to sell off public lands won’t solve the affordable housing crisis or balance the federal budget, but it will result in lost hunting and fishing opportunities and significant harm to the wildlife, people, and communities that rely on public lands.

Under current laws and regulations, we already have ways to properly assess which lands can be swapped or used for housing. We also have a long history of co-stewardship with ranchers, energy companies, and foresters to tap into the potential of public lands without selling them. Please don’t break a system that has served as the backbone to our sporting traditions and worked for decades for rural communities and all Americans.

Public lands are critically important to maintaining the opportunity for the average American to hunt and fish. In fact, more than 75% of western hunters rely exclusively on public lands to hunt. Without these lands, hunting as we know it wouldn’t exist. Wetting a line on a clear mountain stream, glassing for elk on a remote ridge, or calling a mallard from a blind would be a thing of the past for most hunters and anglers. Families, friends and communities would lose their connections to the land and time-honored sporting traditions would die.

Hastily-conceived proposals to sell off public lands to balance the budget don’t make fiscal sense. Rural communities rely on outdoor recreation like hunting and fishing on public lands to fuel their economies. In fact, the outdoor recreation industry generates more than $1 trillion annually and supports more than 7.6 million jobs.

Please stand up for our sporting traditions and the ability for any American to enjoy them, and stand up for our rural communities that enjoy and rely on hunting and fishing to fuel their economies. Oppose efforts to sell off public lands. Public lands are a national treasure – and once they’re gone, they’re gone forever.
